The video shows the mother and child giraffes, who both have a genetic condition known as Leucism which prevents pigmentation. They were spotted wandering in the wild within the Ishaqbini Hirola Conservancy.
The stunning video was captured after rumors had been circulating of locals who had said they saw a white giraffe and her baby. Yet it wasn’t for several months that they managed to find the pair and catch them on video.
While the pair is unable to product colorful pigment and appear like other giraffes, animals with leucism do not face any genetic disadvantages in terms of survival, so they should be fine. Their unique color on the other hand may attract unwanted attention.
The Giraffe Conservation Foundation explains that more than 50% of all giraffes don’t make it past the age of 6 months. They are very vulnerable to predators, such as hyenas and lions.
Many are voicing concerns that the extremely rare giraffes may be susceptible to poaching after the video has been released to the public, as poaching is a big problem of rare wild animals.
After one of the known previous white giraffes was born in the Tarangire National Park, they took serious measures to ensure the safety of the rare giraffe. The Hirola national park has not announced any such similar measures or increased security being taken.
